Terror attacks:  Go to www.Thereligionofpeace.com to see weekly, monthly and since 9/11 lists of deadly terror attacks by Islamic terrorists including specifics of the attacks.  Information is gathered from news sources and does not include “regular” crime, and generally excludes combat and honor killings.  This site believes it is under reporting the number of attacks.  Since 9/11, 17,867 deadly attacks have been carried out.

Obamacare & No Privacy:  In a proposed rule from Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the federal government is demanding insurance companies submit detailed health care information about their patients.  The HHS attempts to justify its proposal on the grounds that it has to be able to compare performance. No matter what the explanation is, however, this type of data collection is an egregious violation of patient-doctor confidentiality and business privacy.

Greenland’s Ice:  In September, climate scientists were trying to get ice added back onto the map of Greenland in the latest version of The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World, published by HarpersCollins’ subsidiary Collins Geo. Glaciologists report that Greenland’s melt should be more like 0.1 percent as opposed to 15 percent from 1999 to 2011, which was stated in the publisher’s news release in response to glaciologists’ concerns.  A day later, Collins Geo issued an apology saying that the press release with the 15 percent reduction was wrong, although they did not acknowledge that the map itself was inaccurate.  Later,
Sheena Barclay, the managing director of Collins Geo, promised a new, “much more detailed map of Greenland that will represent more effectively the ice cover as it is.”

In the States:  In an elementary school in Ridgecrest, CA, a substitute lunch duty worker, was wearing makeup and a spaghetti strap shirt, with his bra straps visible to students.  District dress code policies for students ban both spaghetti straps and visible undergarments.  "I shouldn't have to be explaining to my five and eight year old girls why a man at their school is wearing a bra," said Phyllis Fernandez.  Superintendent Joanna Rummer said the school by state law must allow the transgender employee to express his sexual orientation.  This type of situation was fueling the attempt to overturn California SB48 which requires all public schools – including charter schools – to include positive discussions of the sexual orientations of transgender, bisexual, and gay Americans in all social science courses.  This law goes into effect in January 2012, as the attempt to overturn SB48 did not collect enough signatures.  This will impact textbooks across the land.

Professor Jeanne Lorentzen at Northern Michigan University was offering students in her introductory sociology course 20 extra credit points if they attended an Occupy the Upper Peninsula demonstration with her on Saturday, October 15. Students who do not wish to attend the protest have the option of writing a 20-page term paper about a social movement to receive the same extra credit.
